A friday night spectacular featuring fireworks, music and planes is set to get this year's Sunderland International Airshow off to a flying start.

The free family event gets underway at 7pm on Friday 23 July with the 19 piece RAF Swing Wing band, performing a mix of music from Michael Buble to Glenn Miller classics, followed by Blues Brothers tribute band Jake and Elwood.

Seventies chart toppers The Real Thing will get everyone into the party mood when they take to the stage with smash hits including 'You to Me are Everything' and 'Can you Feel the Force'.

They will be followed by a breathtaking flying display by Miss Demeanor, a psychedelic night flying Hunter aircraft.

Then, as the sun sets, all eyes will be looking to the sky as the mighty Royal Netherlands Airforce F-16 roars past to thrill the crowds, a truly magnificent sight as its afterburners disappear into the dusk.

The evening will end at 10pm with a fantastic firework display over the sea, marking exactly 12 hours until the airshow begins.
