Free of charge and literally on people?s doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture.
This year the event will take place over Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th September. There will be over 45 properties and activities participating in the weekend of heritage this year in Sunderland alone and approximatley 200 properties within the Tyne & Wear region. The Heritage Open Days 2010 Tyne and Wear booklet listing all the properties and activities taking part with details of the days, times they will be open will be available from Tourist Information Centres, Libraries and other venues from the beginning of August.
Some properties and activities will require pre-booking, others recommend booking to avoid disappointment. The majority you can just turn up at. Where pre-booking is required, telephone numbers will be provided within the relevant listing to allow you to reserve a place. You will only be able to make pre-bookings from the beginning of August when the 2010 Tyne and Wear booklet is available throughout the County and the 2010 website is on-line. NO BOOKINGS WILL BE TAKEN BEFORE THIS TIME.
