The parish church formally known as Bishopwearmouth Church or St Michael and All Angels was inaugurated as the Minster for Sunderland on 11th January 1998, in recognition of Sunderland achieveing City status.
Features of the Minster include a state of the art learning centre run by City of Sunderland College and the very popular Clocktower Restaurant which serves a variety of home-made food.
In 2007 it became an extra parochial place of worship, offering a sacred space in the heart of the city, for the whole of Sunderland. At the same time it was renamed The Minster Church of St Michaels and All Angels and St Benedict Biscop.
It has a vibrant church congregation, but also offers much more to the wider community. The restaurant is open daily. Sunderland Antiquarian Society have their headquarters there. Music, language and learning groups also meet there and Sunderland Mister offers space for meetings, exhibitions, concerts and more.
